The City's Off-Leash Map Skips Anderson Mill. A Lake Creek Parkway Dog Park Now Fills the Gap.

Austin's leash rule is simple. A dog stays on a leash in a city park unless it is inside a designated Dog Off-Leash Area. The city's 2026 map lists 30 of those areas. None of them has an address in Anderson Mill, Jollyville, Great Hills or along RM 620.

That gap shapes every off-leash outing in Northwest Austin. A free city off-leash area means a drive east or south. A free fenced yard means crossing into Cedar Park or Round Rock. Since July 25, a third choice sits on Lake Creek Parkway, and it charges admission. Your fall routine depends on which of those three trade-offs suits a given day.

Thirty Off-Leash Areas, and the Big One Closest to Northwest Austin Is on North Lamar

Walnut Creek Metro Park, at 12138 N. Lamar Blvd., heads the city's list. Its 185 acres make it one of the two largest off-leash areas in the system. Emma Long Metro Park is the other, at 193 acres. For a dog that needs a long, unfenced run, Walnut Creek is the northern option.

The other northern entries are small. Metropolitan Pocket Park, at 10300 Metropolitan Dr., and Canyon Ridge Pocket Park, on the northbound IH-35 frontage at 12217, are each listed at under one acre. They work for a quick stop, not for a morning outing.

One local habit needs correcting. Bull Creek District Park, the creek-and-limestone park many Northwest Austin households know best, does not appear among the designated off-leash areas. Under city rules, dogs there stay leashed. Most city parks are open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. unless a sign says otherwise. The city's closures page, which it uses to post every park closure, listed no current project at Walnut Creek, Bull Creek or Great Northern Dam Far West when we checked. It changes often, so look again before you load the car.

What Brew and Paws Charges for the Shorter Drive

Brew and Paws, at 9825 N. Lake Creek Parkway, is a 1.6-acre off-leash park built around a full-service bar and kitchen. It has air-conditioned coworking cabanas, shade, a splash pad, ice baths and water stations for dogs. The business's own site says it serves nearby Anderson Mill, Jollyville and Lakeline. Community Impact's opening coverage spelled the name "Brews and Paws." The business uses "Brew and Paws."

The pricing changes how the place fits a week. According to its membership page, a dog day pass is $15, each additional dog is $7.50, a month is $39.95 and a year is $399.95. People get in free.

Run the numbers against your own schedule:

  • One visit a month: the $15 day pass is the cheapest route.
  • Three visits a month: three day passes come to $45, which is more than the $39.95 monthly membership. So the membership pays for itself on the third visit.
  • Every month for a year: twelve monthly payments total $479.40. The $399.95 annual plan saves $79.45.
  • Two dogs, one visit: $22.50 for the day.

The site lists the park as open seven days a week but gives no clock hours. Passes can be bought at the door. The business asks for a dog profile and current vaccination records. Entry rules require dogs to be spayed or neutered, at least four months old, current on vaccinations, free of fleas and ticks, and friendly. Handlers stay with their dogs. The required vaccine list is worded differently on different pages of the site. One page says DHPP and another says DHLPPC. Call ahead if your records list only one of them. Outside food, outside drinks, glass containers and dog treats are not allowed. Leave the treat pouch in the car.

The spay-and-neuter rule matters most for families with a puppy. A young dog that hasn't been fixed yet can't use this park. The fenced public yards in the next section have their own rules, so check before you go.

The business has said it plans dog meetups, happy hours and a monthly market with local vendors. A "Market Days" post on its site promises breakfast tacos, mimosas, lattes and vendors from 9 a.m. "this Saturday," but it carries no calendar date. Watch the park's social accounts for the next one.

The Fenced Yards Just Over the County Line

If you'd rather not pay at the gate, the nearest fenced public options are run by Cedar Park and Round Rock. Two private dog bars round out the choices for dogs that come along for a drink.

Spot Where Size Cost Timing to know
Brew and Paws 9825 N. Lake Creek Parkway, Austin 1.6 acres $15 day pass; $39.95/month Open daily; no clock hours posted

Dog Depot Dog Park 800 Deerfoot Dr., Round Rock 1.85 acres No fee listed on city page 6 a.m.–6 p.m. from Oct. 2 through March 31
Dog House Drinkery & Dog Park 3800 County Road 175, Leander Half-acre yard $8 dog day pass Closed Mondays except special events

Cedar Bark Park is the largest fenced option in the table. It has a pond, showers, fountains and a separate area for small dogs. Its posted rules keep the small-dog side for dogs under 30 pounds. They also require current vaccinations and registration, bar dogs under four months old or in heat, and prohibit food, treats, alcohol and glass. The maintenance schedule is the detail that catches people. A Tuesday-morning visit runs into a closure that lasts until 3 p.m.

Round Rock's Dog Depot sits behind Lake Creek Pool. It has a large-dog area, a small-dog area for dogs under 40 pounds, and a rotating section that closes for maintenance. Dogs must be vaccinated and microchipped. Food, treats, glass or metal containers, and anything with wheels are not allowed. The city page dates to 2024, so confirm hours with Round Rock Parks and Recreation before a first visit.

Dog House Drinkery in Leander follows the same idea as Brew and Paws at a lower day rate. Its fenced half-acre off-leash yard and patio sit next to a bar. Posted hours are 3–9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 3–10 p.m. Friday, noon–10 p.m. Saturday and noon–9 p.m. Sunday. The business notes those hours can shift with weather or events. Bring proof of vaccinations.

October Changes the Clock and Fills the Calendar

The season matters as much as the address. Dog Depot's schedule switched on October 2 from 6 a.m.–8 p.m. to 6 a.m.–6 p.m. As of this week, an after-work visit in Round Rock has a 6 p.m. cutoff. Cedar Bark Park's dawn-to-dusk hours shrink on their own as the days get shorter. Brew and Paws, with its bar and kitchen, is set up for evenings, and its biggest posted fall event happens after dark.

Here is what's on the dog calendar near Northwest Austin this month:

  1. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 4–8 p.m.: Pints and Pups with Austin Humane Society at Celis Brewery, 10001 Metric Blvd. Entry is free, with adoptable dogs and vendors. Austin Humane Society lists the same evening as "Soft Hour ATX: Pups and Pints."
  2. Saturday, Oct. 10, 11 a.m.–2 p.m.: Paws & Pumpkin at Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming Cedar Park, 14900 Avery Ranch Blvd., #A-300. It's free, with adoptable dogs, pet portraits and a costume contest.
  3. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 5:30–8:30 p.m.: Halloween Costume Party at Brew and Paws, with a costume contest, prizes and photo setups.
  4. Friday, Oct. 30: An all-day Halloween party at Dogtopia of North Austin, 13945 North Highway 183, with costume photos and activities. The listing doesn't say whether dogs that aren't already Dogtopia clients can join, so ask first.

The two Halloween events are three days apart and suit different dogs. The Brew and Paws party is on a weeknight in an off-leash yard with a bar. The Dogtopia event runs during the day at a daycare.

On Patios, the Restaurant Makes the Call

Off-leash yards are one part of the routine. Patio meals are the other. A 2019 Texas law lets restaurants statewide allow diners to bring dogs to outdoor seating, but it doesn't require any restaurant to do so. Austin had its own local ordinance before the state acted. Whether a dog can join you on a given patio depends on that business's policy.

That's why the most dependable stops are places that say plainly that dogs are welcome. The Good Lot, a beer and wine garden at 2500 W New Hope Drive in Cedar Park, states it on its own site. Its posted hours are 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon–9 p.m. Sunday. Brew and Paws and Dog House Drinkery are the other two, with off-leash space attached.

For a Northwest Austin household, the October choice comes down to this. The free long run is on North Lamar. The free fenced yards have maintenance days and, as of this week, earlier closing times. The closest off-leash yard to Anderson Mill costs $15 a visit, or $39.95 a month for anyone who goes at least three times.

Small, practical details like these add up to day-to-day life in a neighborhood, and they're the kind of thing The Niño Team pays attention to across Northwest Austin, from Anderson Mill to Four Points.
